Experts have hailed Dubai’s planned Dh30 billion ($8.17 billion) rainwater drainage network as a crucial way to guard against flooding, avoid financial losses and stave off the worst effects of climate change.
Flooding alone can cause huge financial damage, with climate change expected to lead to warming temperatures, more rain and severe weather in the Gulf, putting pressure on countries to act.
But effective drainage can tackle this and is vital in places such as urban Dubai, where the population is estimated to have swelled to 3.7 million.

Shareef Al Romaithi: Emirati pilot emerges from 45-day Mars simulation mission

An Emirati pilot has completed a 45-day Mars simulation mission inside a Nasa habitat in Houston, Texas.
Shareef Al Romaithi, 39, a captain with Etihad Airways, and his three US colleagues “flew to the Red Planet” to carry out walks on its surface and solve problems that arose on their “spaceship” using virtual reality technology.
The crew members began the Human Exploration Research Analogue (Hera) mission on May 11 when they were locked away in a three-storey habitat, with very little communication with the outside world.

This was phase two of the overall project that aims to measure the psychological and physiological effects of prolonged confinement and isolation, similar to those experienced during extended space travel.

Two children killed after fire breaks out in Fujairah home
An eight-year-old girl and a seven-year-old boy have died after a fire broke out in their home in Fujairah's Al Tuwiyain area on Tuesday.
Another child, five, was critically injured, Fujairah Police said on social media.
Emergency crews arrived at the site after being alerted about the incident at 2pm.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control and transferred the injured to Dibba Hospital.
